And that’s the good news…

Hey Hey

Have you tried out Trial Reels yet?

This reasonably new Instagram feature is a great way to get your content in front of a new audience - with your reels exclusively shown to people who don’t follow you during the trial phase.

Since testing it out, I’ve seen this feature deliver some impressive views and new follower stats.

Sadly it is only available to accounts with 1000+ followers. If that’s not you, you can still grow your audience by taking inspiration from some of the content below.

It’s good news… weak.

Sometimes you have great news to share… but if you lose your audience in the first two seconds they won’t hear about it from you.

Check out the difference in energy and delivery between these three good news reels

If you’re only going to watch one reel… make it the Auckland Mayor’s reel. Explaining a new policy sounds dull - but it’s all in the delivery.

From walking in waving a newspaper around, to the Bob the Builder powerpoint, the whole reel is engaging, amusing and entirely watchable.

This kind of content takes a little more work than a quick piece to camera, but it will get your message across and create a better connection with your audience.

How to make your good news reel great

  • What props can you incorporate into your reel for visual interest?

  • How can you tell a story to highlight why this is good news for your constituents?

  • What’s your first line - and how does that grab your audience?

  • Don’t forget about bringing some energy to your delivery!

the human behind the headlines

We used to share press conferences as content… but no-one has an attention span for that anymore.

But I do like what Queensland Premier David Crisafulli is doing with some off the cuff moments at the start of his stand ups.

Why it works:

  • It is a genuine human moment, that is unrehearsed and shows the “real” Queensland Premier.

  • It’s relatable and pretty amusing whether you think the Queensland winter weather is mild, or freezing cold.

  • He avoided the temptation to use this moment as a hook for an announcement. Sometimes your content can just be purely for entertainment.

Are you ready to try it?
You’ll just have to capture the right moment. You can’t script content like this, nor should you force it. But keep an eye out for that moment in speeches, press conferences or conversations that makes a cute little vignette.

beat the “scammers”

What juicy photos do you have on your phone? For me it’s all footpaths, potholes, roads and buses…

This reel format can be used for businesses, but it can easily be adapted for politics too.

What you’ll need to make your own version…

  • Four to six photos or videos to feature. These could be of a single project, or even a whip around your electorate. They can be as boring or as funny as you like.

  • A brief clip of you looking at your phone or computer.

  • The audio.

  • Ideally, two cameras…. but that’s not necessary.

You can find a step by step guide to create this reel here

That’s it for now, but as always I’d love to hear from you. Send me your reels or something cool at @katewilson.au

Cheers,

Kate
